Speeches were made by Azat Yeghiazarian, editor of the book and the initiator of the “Literature of the XX Century” series, Director of “Spyurk” scientific-educational center Suren Danielian, PhD.

Surmelian’s “Techniques of Fiction Writing: Measure and Madness” is used as a textbook in many American colleges and universities. Surmelian translated into English “Daredevils of Sassoun” (“Sasna Tsrer”) the Armenian national epic, published “Apples of Immortality” folk tales of Armenia in USA and England. It is a unique biographical piece of work on the Armenian realities of the beginning of the century about which the author himself said, “If there was nothing left from Western Armenia, my book would have given chance to the historians and ethnographers to revive that vanished life”. It was translated and published in Armenian in 1980. In 1945 Surmelian wrote his “I ask you, ladies and gentlemen” book in English with an introduction by William Saroyan. The first and only Armenian book of Surmelian - “Joyful Lights”, a compilation of his poets – was published in 1924 thanks to Vahan Tekeyan. These words belong to Levon-Zaven Surmelian and he has proved these words through his writings. Being an American writer I can bring greater service to my people and even though I write in English I do not stop being an Armenian writer”.
